Understanding the High School Tennis Team Format
At West Park High School, our tennis program is designed to give players a place to grow and compete while fostering team spirit and individual excellence. Here’s a quick guide to help players and parents understand how our team is structured:
Varsity Team
- Composition:
- Top 12 Players: The varsity squad is made up of the best 12 players on the team.
- Team Format:
- 6 Singles Players: These players compete in individual matches.
- 6 Doubles Players: These players pair up to form 3 doubles teams.
- Match Structure:
- In each league match, all six singles players compete in singles matches.
- The doubles players form teams, with each team playing one doubles match.
- The combined results from singles and doubles determine the outcome of the team match.
- Expectations:
- Varsity is a highly competitive squad for those who have demonstrated strong technical skills, tactical awareness, mental toughness, and physical fitness.
- Players on the varsity team are expected to consistently bring their best game to every match and practice.
JV/Development Team
Competition:
- JV matches are held as exhibition games rather than official league-sanctioned matches, giving players a chance to gain match-play experience in a competitive yet supportive environment.
- Note: Due to the high level of competition, we also cut players who are not yet ready to compete at the JV level.
Path to Varsity:
Success on the JV level is a stepping stone. With hard work and consistent improvement, JV players have the opportunity to move up to varsity in future seasons.
